The
United Steelworkers is bargaining with the Council on Northern
Interior Forest Employment Relations (CONIFER) which is an
employer association that represents forest companies in the
province’s northern Interior. CONIFER was established in 1985
out of the former North Cariboo Forest Labour Relations
Association, that began back in 1972. Both associations
bargained with the formers IWA Canada, before the IWA joined
the United Steelworkers in 2004. There are about 3,000 USW
Local 1-424 and 1-425 members who work for CONIFER-affiliated
